• Cirque de Mafate - A remote caldera accessible only on foot or by helicopter. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The hike from Maïdo viewpoint is steep but rewards you with views of sheer cliffs and hidden hamlets.
• Piton des Neiges - The highest peak on the island. The overnight trek is demanding; start before dawn to reach the summit for sunrise. The trail passes through tamarin forests and lava flows.
• Saint-Gilles Beach - The best place for a safe swim. Calm waters, black sand, and a lively promenade with cafes.
• Ravine à Malheur Waterfall - A short walk leads to a powerful cascade where you can swim in the plunge pool. The road is rough; a 4x4 helps in wet weather.

Réunion’s cuisine is a spicy fusion of French, African, Indian, and Asian traditions. Street food and market stalls offer the most authentic tastes.

The best time for hiking and outdoor activities is during the dry season, especially from June to September. Trails are firm, skies are clearer, and the risk of cyclones is low.

January and February are the hottest months, with high humidity. This is also the peak of the rainy season, when afternoon downpours are common. If you visit then, plan activities for the morning. Carnival in February brings parades and street parties, especially in Saint-Denis.

For volcano viewing, the dry season offers the best visibility. The summit of Piton des Neiges can be cold even in summer; pack layers. Shoulder months (October and November) can be pleasant but bring a higher chance of tropical storms.

Réunion’s terrain and weather vary wildly in a single day. Pack for both heat and cold, sun and rain.

• Rain jacket or poncho - Critical for the rainy season and for high-altitude hikes. Weather can change in minutes.
