The Pamir Highway is a graded gravel road; hire a 4x4 with a driver who knows the route. Carry extra fuel and food. In the western valleys, homestays provide simple beds and hot meals. Learn a few Tajik greetings. Hospitality is genuine, but English is rare. Download offline maps. Avoid political discussions. Photography near military sites is prohibited. Travel with a local guide for border areas. The reward is solitude, lunar landscapes, and the kindness of mountain communities.

The roads are clear in the west but snow may linger on high passes. Autumn (September to October) offers stable weather and golden light. Harvest season means fresh fruit in bazaars. Winter (November to March) shuts most mountain routes. Dushanbe stays accessible, but temperatures drop near freezing. Khujand in the north is milder. If you visit in winter, stick to the cities and lower elevations. For trekking or the Pamir Highway, plan for June through September only.

Packing for Tajikistan means preparing for extremes. Bring these items:

• Layered clothing - Days can be hot, nights near freezing. A thermal base, fleece, and windproof shell cover most conditions.
• Sturdy hiking boots - Required for treks and the loose gravel of the Pamir Highway. Trainers are fine for Dushanbe only.
• High SPF sunscreen and sunglasses - UV is intense above 3,000 metres. Glare off snow and rock can cause snow blindness.
• Headache and altitude medication - Diamox helps with acclimatisation. Carry paracetamol for common headaches.
• Cash in Somoni (TJS) - ATMs are rare outside Dushanbe and Khujand. US dollars are accepted at larger hotels but not for everyday purchases.
